New 4D Ultrasound at St. Luke's
has real time motion
New ultrasound
technology is now available at St. Luke’s bringing 3D alive
with “real-time” motion, creating what’s
known as 4D ultrasound.
This new ultrasound
technology displays clinical images of the human body, allowing
physicians and patients to see revolutionary “4D
images.” The fourth dimension is "real-time motion”
added to three-dimensional images.
“What
this means is that, for example, a pregnant woman can see her baby move
and stretch and maybe even yawn within her body. It’s fairly
close to a photo-type picture, but in motion,” said Scott
Studden, St. Luke’s director of diagnostic imaging.
“In this application, an added value is that this improved
ultrasound technology allows a parent to see the baby and share these
moving images of the baby with family and friends even before the baby
is born.”
This GE Medical
Systems ultrasound equipment, named the GE Voluson 730, is widely
recognized for its clinical use in obstetrics and gynecology.
It’s a powerful tool that can aid physicians studying a
baby’s motion, behavior and surface anatomy in utero, as well
as problems related to a woman’s uterus and ovaries.
According to
Radiologist Dr. Frank Suslavich, “In addition to obstetrics,
the 4D ultrasound with real-time motion has the potential to expand
diagnostic capabilities, therapy planning and ultrasound-guided
minimally invasive diagnostic procedures such as biopsies.”
The GE Voluson 730
is installed at only about 200 hospitals, clinics and physician offices
within the US, and is currently the only one in our region.
