Hospital has (ultra) sound idea
New machine makes pre-birth ‘baby’ pictures a
reality

Newly acquired radiology equipment at DeWitt Hospital means that
patients can now have more detailed tests and get the results a lot
faster. It also means expectant mothers can indulge in one of the
latest trends in family photos-baby pictures before the baby is born.
DeWitt Hospital CEO Darren Caldwell announced at last week’s
DeWitt Chamber of Commerce meeting that with the acquisition of the
hospital’s new 4D Ultrasound machine, parents-to-be can now
obtain much more detailed pictures of the child in-utero than ever
before.
The service has become popular all over the country and the Internet
has a long list of sites offering such pictures. With the acquisition
of this machine DeWitt Hospital becomes only one of about three
facilities in Arkansas to make these pictures available.
Later at the hospital, radiology director Annie Scroggins demonstrated
how the machine worked. She called up pictures so detailed, the fetus
can be seen sucking its thumb, and fingers and toes are clearly
outlined.
“It’s dynamic; it’s live,”
Scroggins said. “We can actually print out pictures of the
babies with incredible detail,” she said, “or we
can download them on a CD.”
The pictures cost $300 payable in cash, which Scroggins said is less
than many other providers of these pictures charge. “These
are strictly for your scrapbook,” she explained.
The new equipment also has many serious medical benefits. Scroggins
said it can provide “much greater detail. It’s able
to pick up very precise, very small things.” Patients can now
get more tests in DeWitt rather than having to travel to Pine Bluff or
Little Rock. As a result, the schedule for the ultrasound department
has been expanded. “We like that; it’s good patient
care,” Scroggins said.
With the new equipment, the hospital can now do more Doppler studies,
which will help “if you think you have clots.”
These tests can now be scheduled two or three times a week, instead of
just a few times. The use of echo studies such as echocardiograms has
also been increased.
The ultrasound is not the only new piece of equipment. The hospital has
also added a PACS (Picture Archiving and Communications System). Using
this system, technicians at DeWitt Hospital can instantly send X-rays
or other ultrasound pictures to a service in Mississippi, have them
read and get results back in as little as one hour. With the addition
of a Nighthawk Service, “We can now have critical images read
24 hours a day,” Scroggins said.
Scroggins showed how the PACS machine can magnify images and even
remove the bones from the picture to allow a closer look at the soft
tissue. Once she has examined the pictures, she pushes a button,
“and in three minutes, it’s at their site and ready
to be read.” The new system does not use film,
“which cuts down on time.”
The new equipment was paid for out of grants the hospital received
through U.S. Rep. Marion Berry (D, First District).
Caldwell said these systems are the same ones used at the University of
Arkansas for Medical Sciences.
Scroggins said a major benefit of receiving this equipment is that more
can be done at DeWitt Hospital. “We’re very lucky
as a small facility to have this.”
Berry Delivers $400,000 for DeWitt Hospital
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S.
Representative Marion Berry (D-AR, 1st) announced today the
Omnibus Appropriations Bill recently signed into law included $400,000
for DeWitt Hospital, located in DeWitt, AR.
The funds will be used to modernize DeWitt Hospital’s
facilities, particularly the Radiology and Laboratory Departments, to
accommodate expansion and renovations necessary in order to better meet
the healthcare demands of the region.
“DeWitt Hospital was built in 1963 and
was last updated almost 20 years ago,” Berry said.
“As the sole provider of acute healthcare services in the
region, DeWitt Hospital is in critical need of modernization of its
facilities. These funds are critical to the health of the Delta region,
but also a necessity to its growth; a modern hospital facility is
crucial to sustaining economic development in rural areas. I am proud
to have been involved in securing these funds.”
DeWitt Hospital is a small, non-profit, Critical
Access Hospital providing healthcare services for the citizens of
Arkansas County and the Mississippi Delta region. Arkansas County has a
population of 20,749, and covers 988 square miles; DeWitt Hospital is
the sole provider of acute medical care within a 35-mile radius.
“By improving DeWitt Hospital we can keep it competitive,
attract physicians to a rural community, and meet the needs of citizens
in the surrounding areas,” Berry added. “At this
time, many patients are transported to larger hospitals in Little Rock
for treatment –even though DeWitt is closer –
because the facilities do not allow for quality care in all areas. Soon
many long trips taken to Little Rock for specialized care will no
longer be necessary.”
