Ultrasound Facts
and Information
What is the
difference between an ultrasound
and a sonogram?
An ultrasound
is the machine that allows you to see your baby during your pregnancy.
A sonogram
is the picture taken of your baby during the ultrasound. A sonogram
is a "still-shot" of your baby. 4D
Ultrasounds take 3D
ultrasound images, or 3D
sonograms, and adds the element of time to the process. The result:
Live Action ultrasound
images of your baby. Some people refer to the procedure as prenatal
imaging, 3D imaging, a 3D scan, or 4D scan.
What Is the Difference Between 2D, 3D and 4D Ultrasound?
One of the most wonder occasions for expectant moms and
dads is the very first time they view their unborn child through the
use of ultrasound. In years past, the screen images were dark and hard
for the inexperienced eye to decipher. In recent years, 3D and 4D
ultrasound has become widely available to parents who desire a
more detailed image of their child.
Prenatal sonography is the utilization of high frequency
sound waves which travel into the womb via a transducer to generate
images of the baby. A 2D sonogram is the procedure that most women have
during their prenatal care from a doctor that produces black and white
2D ultrasound pictures. This kind of ultrasound is usually used to
listen to the babies heartbeat and identify gender. It can also help a
doctor determine how far along the pregnancy is as well as look at any
potential birth defects. It is usually conducted at 20 weeks to allow
the doctor to ensure the overall health of the placenta, and that the
baby is developing as expected. Around this time, it's usually possible
to deterine gender, assuming the baby cooperates and is in a good
position!
3D ultrasound produces a clear, detailed image. 4D
Ultrasound is accomplished by basically viewing the 3D images in
succession.
Sonography has been used since the 1950s. Just like 2D
ultrasound, 3D/4D ultrasound does not use radiation such an with
an xray. It uses strictly sound waves.
3D/4D ultrasounds are available in some doctor's
offices, but tend to be optional services offered by specialty
boutiques. As a result, 3D/4D ultrasounds from boutiques are not paid
for by insurance. According to most ultrasound centers, the best
time to have a 3D/4D ultrasound is between 24-36 weeks.
A large number of ultrasound locations allow and
encourage you to bring friends and family to share the 3D 4D ultrasound
experience. It's a great bonding time for the whole family.
